As an active member of MRPA, I have learned a lot about our history and interacted with various professionals.  I strive to make decisions by actively seeking input from various sources. I will continue to promote our traditions and successes through leadership and service.

I want to see our profession and our association move into the next phase.

By providing a space at the table for new board members to step up to help, contribute, and lead, I look forward to supporting MRPA's ongoing and new efforts through my dedication.

Tell us why you want to serve on the Board of Directors

I want to continue to serve on the Board of Directors because I value the work being done at the State level. It's a great way to stay connected with professional colleagues while having a voice to help affect growth in our own individual communities. I hope my contribution to the association is valuable and that I can continue to serve for as long as it is necessary.

Tell us what your priorities would be if elected

While serving as a representative on the MRPA Board for more than half of my career, I am looking forward to serving in more of a leadership role to help the forward momentum of our association. As a member at-large and then SMART representative, I found my place in the organization through helping to promote professional networking, training and educational opportunities. As VP of the association, I plan to take on a more active role and support our association’s president to promote the existing initiatives of the board and plan for the future. I am excited to strengthen our position within the State of Maine by promoting the mission of MRPA and to help elevate the profession.  Additionally, I am excited to recruit other professionals who want to jump on board with us to help sustain the organization’s leadership in the long term.

I have reaped the benefits of what the MRPA has set out to accomplish through offering education, networking, and personal growth opportunities. My skills in the Recreation Field have grown because of these sessions and relationships I have formed through the MRPA. I would be honored to be part of that mission going forward for many years to come.

To set forth a plan for increasing the MRPA's reach and visibility in the State of Maine. Being Treasurer is a great way to also utilize my M.B.A.

SMART Rep

Erika Dube

Deputy Director, Saco Parks & Recreation

Tell us why you want to serve on the Board of Directors

I am interested in serving as the Regional SMART Rep because I am passionate about continuing the development of our professional network in southern Maine. We are so fortunate to have such a large pool of dedicated and experienced recreation professionals local to one another. I have found this group to be collaborative, encouraging, and supportive, and have gained a lot of insight from our collective knowledge about the programs and resources we all provide to our communities. I have found it invaluable to have a forum to share ideas and stories, examine the ways our services are both different and alike, and feel in this group, we all have gained partnerships with neighboring departments.

I am excited about the opportunity to continue the work of those who have led the way in making sure that the SMART group is a vibrant, active network and appreciate the opportunity!

Tell us what your priorities would be if elected

My priorities if elected the SMART rep would be to set an exciting meeting schedule for the upcoming year, starting with a poll of participating departments on both topics of interest and topics of expertise. I would like to facilitate a “how are we alike and how are we different” session for common programs, say for example after school services. This particular topic has been referenced a couple times during meetings this season and has sparked interest for me in exploring what we can all learn from each other and bring back to our own programs. This meeting format could apply to a number of programs, comparing program features and policies, staffing, registration software set up, and more. I would like to offer a feature for SMART members to nominate departments they feel have an especially unique program/service/facility to present about. Lastly, I would also like to make sure that all SMART members feel they are included, that all levels of experience feel involved, try to expand participation, clarify within our network the background and job-knowledge members have, and make sure that all communities interested in hosting meetings are represented.

At Large (3 Members)

Jason Hanken, CPRP

Recreation Superintendent, Lewiston Recreation

Tell us why you want to serve on the Board of Directors

I'd like to get on the board to help shape the future direction of the organization.

Tell us what your priorities would be if elected

I would work to create a regional organization for the Central Maine portion of the state. There are about 20 communities in the Central Maine belt of the state that would benefit greatly from working together. Forming this physically closer regional group would help in many ways like unifying sports rules and play or bringing training days closer.

I have been working with the MRPA Conference committee to plan and organize that event and the Fall Workshop and been on the Board of Directors for two years.

Tell us why you want to serve on the Board of Directors

Our industry is an ever changing field where a parks and recreation professional must adapt to the needs of their community on a regular basis. Offering support for these individuals and their departments is beneficial to their growth, as well as the industry as a whole. I have experienced first-hand the impact a strong state organization can have, and I would like the opportunity to continue to provide similar experiences for our colleagues around the state.

Tell us what your priorities would be if elected

During my first year as a board member, I have enjoyed the opportunity to network with parks and recreation professionals from all over the state of Maine. This has been extremely valuable in helping to oversee educational opportunities at both the Fall Workshop and Spring Conference. I look forward to fostering these relationships, and working to provide forward thinking and relevant information to the members of MRPA in upcoming networking events.

Parliamentarian

Doug Beck, CPRP

Outdoor Recreation Supervisor, Maine Bureau of Parks & Lands

Tell us why you want to serve on the Board of Directors

I would like to serve on the board to do what I can to help the association move forward in its service to its members, the member's agencies and organizations and to the people of Maine. While we (MRPA) have come a long way, there is still so much that could be done.

Tell us what your priorities would be if elected

As Parliamentarian, of course my first priority is to assure that Robert's Rules and a civil tone are adhered to at all meetings. Since this is rarely an issue, my second priority is to help in any way I can as the board considers the needs and the wants of the profession.
